Hej kompisar! (Hi friends!)
My friends and Iare joining the Brown Bag Vintage and Crafts Market . YAY! It’s our first time and it’s a bit exciting and terrifying. I’ve been waiting for something interesting like this because I feel Fika Fika Fika would be totally lost in an actual bazaar. We don’t even have enough stocks for big bazaars so we’d prefer something more intimate like this event. It’s just all sorts of awesome! Of course we can’t wait to sell some wares and we’re also crafting some new ones. All the Frankie publications will be sold at the fair.. so this time you don’t have to pay any shipping fees since you can browse and get it at the market. Double Yay! There will also be a lot of one-of postcards for sale and lovely paper goods that we have in stock. Kitch is going to make cool Gocco-print postcards/notecards and I’m going to do some Absolute Classic Masterpieces AKA Felt items. Maybe you can pick some Christmas presents for your friends and beloved ones at the market! Hah. By the way, Pre-loved items such as CDs, 7″ and magazines will also be sold on the side… so feel free to rummage through them.
Since it’s not like your usual bazaar, I can imagine all the other concessionaires will also be quite interesting, oh and not to mention there will be a lot of activities for the young and old. I particularly want to attend the paper-cut outs, since I can just about manage it, but I’m not good at it. We really hope you can come, it’s after work for most people, so you don’t really have an excuse..

“52 Weeks of Mail, brought to you by Etsy Greetings Team, is designed to encourage people to be more intentional about relationships and keeping in touch with friends and family by sending out a card or letter each week, for the next year. I don’t know about you, but I LOVE getting a personal, hand-written card or letter in the mail.
Throughout 52 Weeks of Mail, we are asking everyone to commit to sending just ONE card or letter each week. You can send more than one, of course! 52 Weeks of Mail BEGINS on October 9th, 2011, and ends on October 7th, 2012. Please feel free to blog about this event, or share it on your Facebook page. Share it on Twitter, or any other social networking site too!
We are hoping to get 1000 LIKES by the end of September. Please help out by sharing this with all of your Facebook friends! Let’s make this viral!”
I saw this truly interesting project on facebook the other day. I know it is going to be a bit of a task for me since the post office is far from me, but I really want to support this because I love mail and any sort of analogue correspondence. I think everybody should keep snail mail alive, if you agree, then let’s try our best and join this project. There is no money involved to join, one only has to like the page to show support (click the photo to go to the fb page) and then it’s up to us to challenge ourselves. I guess people can take pictures or blog/tweet (with hashtag #52weeksofmail) about it as proof if they want, but it isn’t a requirement as the page says. Exciting!

Dreaming of Sweden: Majstång Midsommer Midsummer Ondoy Rain Sweden Wanderlust

Swedish Midsummer Eve/Solstice Celebration (Photo by Fredrik Schlyter).
“Because Midsummer was thought to be one of the times of the year when magic was strongest, it was considered a good night to perform rituals to look into the future. Traditionally, young people pick bouquets of seven or nine different flowers and put them under their pillow in the hope of dreaming about their future spouse. In the past it was believed that herbs picked at Midsummer were highly potent, and water from springs could bring good health. Greenery placed over houses and barns were supposed to bring good fortune and health to people and livestock; this old tradition of decorating with greens continues, even though most don’t take it seriously. To decorate with greens was called att maja (to may) and may be the origin of the word majstång, maja coming originally from the month May. Other researchers say the term came from German merchants who raised the maypole in June because the Swedish climate made it impossible to find the necessary greens and flowers in May, and continued to call it a maypole. Today, however, it is most commonly called a “midsommarstång” (literally midsummer’s pole).”
It’s Midsommarafton – Midsummer’s eve in Sweden. How lovely it must be. This is probably their most important holiday, more important than the national day even! I really wish I were there, especially with this seemingly never-ending rain we are experiencing here in the Philippines right now. I love the rain, but not when it is continuous and already alarming. The occurence of another Ondoy/Ketsana is definitely NOT welcome.
Going back to the Swedish midsummer, I am quite amused with the idea of collecting those 7 herbs and flowers and placing them under your pillow to dream of your future partner. I’d probably do that for the heck of it, but since my dreams are so vivid these days, it might actually turn out great (wishful thinking more like though!). I remember when I was little, they had this silly saying that if you place a photo of your crush underneath your pillow then turn your pillow over 3 times (or something) you will dream of the person in your sleep. I tell ya, I cut out pictures of my crushes from Teenbeat, 16 and Bop in the hopes of dreaming of either the New Kids On The Block , Wil Wheaton or Corey Haim (RIP). Did it work? Well I do remember dreaming of Corey Haim buying me food at our High School cafeteria. That’s just about it.
Midsummer Eve in Sweden by agn lau made in sweden.
Dreams aside, judging from the photo above, I think just having those pretty flowers around is more than enough to give one a good mood. Nevermind the dreaming part, they’re too nice to be squished under the pillows.
So anyway, Glad Midsommar Sweden. Jag önskar jag var där nu (or any day for that matter)!

Mail, music and more!
It’s a good mail week for me! I got tonnes of postcard and I finally received the ‘Spring’ present from Kalle. I thought it was going to be archived under my growing list of lost mail, but after almost 2 months of travel from Helsinki to Manila, it’s here. Hurrah! I feel really bad when mail gets lost. In fact I am embarrassed. Yes it’s not my fault but knowing that somebody took time and effort and spent money to send something to you, it does make you feel awful for the sender more than for yourself. So I suppose somebody is enjoying the wonderful mail Nuria sent me after her trip to Gothenburg. The photo below is the package I didn’t receive. *shakes fist*
The lost package from Nuria (Photo from Nuria)
The surprise package from Kalle included the latest cd from Anna Järvinen “Anna Den Tredje” and a cd single from Regina “Jos et Sä Soita”. Yay! I haven’t paid attention to Anna Järvinen much but I listened to her a long time ago. For some reason I’ve associated her with Anna Ternheim who I only found out due to her cover of Bröder Daniel’s Shoreline. They’re both not indiepop but I do like listening to them have really beautiful voices and good songs too! I’ve just listened to Anna’s CD and I already have a favourite! As for Regina, I know they’ve been around for sometime even Last.fm keeps recommending them saying I might like them but I didn’t really listen until Kalle told me about them again. I didn’t even know Mikko from Shine 2009 is a member of this band. They make catch electropop music so everyone must listen. I shan’t forget to mention, Kalle himself is a member of an awesome band called Scarlet Youth. I’m so excited about the new stuff because I’ve heard a bit, and they are ridiculously dreamy! Anyway, again, such a cool surprise. Kiitos Kalle! You’ve made my mailbox happy.
I shan’t forget, I’m really chuffed about the postcards too. I received around 20, all are from either Postcrossing or Walltype. The latter is just a relatively new site for Postcard lovers. It’s like postcrossing a bit, but the difference is the community is really small, you end up getting acquainted with the members because you send to each other over and over again… it’s really fun, and I highly recommend it to anyone as addicted to postcards, as I am.
On a different note… my birthday is a month from now. I wonder what the mailbox will bring. I’m not counting on anything though since I don’t go around town declaring when it is (except now) it’s not like anybody knows. I don’t know why I place such importance on my birthday. I’m one of those folks who are either giddy or depressed about it. Unfortunately for many years it’s been the latter, I doubt this year will be any different. I’ll just cross my fingers. Sigh. You are of course invited to send me presents. Haha. Yes I’m such a sucker for them obviously.
xx
